Prankster Comets are a special function in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. They have different effects on each Galaxy. The Lumacomète knows a lot about their nature, and if he is asked by his clients to do so when said clients talk to him, he has the power to move them.

Abilities[]

Prankster Comets can alter the order of planets and have the following effects:

Speedy Comets[]

Main article: Speedy Comets

Speedy Comets are red and give a time limit as to how long Mario has to complete his mission. They and the Cosmic Comet are tied in likelihood in the first game, being the fourth most common. Speedy Comets generate a red haze when they infect a Galaxy. Their nature as a limiter for time elapsed gives them a sort of "time bomb" aspect. These comets appear in both games.

Daredevil Comets[]

Main article: Daredevil Comets

Daredevil Comets are gray and give Mario one life only, although the haze that the generate is black in both games. Daredevil Comets can be used to practice no-damage runs due to their "One Mistake And You're Out" nature. Both games feature them.

Purple Comets[]

Main article: Purple Comets

Purple Comets scatter at least 100 Purple Coins around a certain area of the galaxy. They earned their name from their color, and Mario can only encounter them after Bowser's defeat. However, there can be a time limit for certain comets hitting different galaxies. They have unique music if there's a time limit. This comet is unlocked after beating Bowser with 60 stars. The only two galaxies where Purple Comets have the theme without the time limit are the Battlerock Galaxy and the Dreadnought Galaxy. Purple Comets appear in both games.

Fast-Foe and Double Time comets.[]

Main articles: Fast-Foe Comets and Double Time Comets

Fast-foe comets are yellow/orange. They are the rarest, only hitting two galaxies, and only appear in the first game. As their name implies, these comets make foes (usually Thwomps and Tox Boxes) faster. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, a similar comet known as the Double-time Comet appears. They are very rare and only hit two galaxies. Their color is yellow-orange.

Cosmic and Clone comets[]

Main articles: Cosmic Comets and Clone Comets

Cosmic Comets are blue, and they have a cosmic mirror race the player to the Power Star. They and the Speedy Comet are tied for the second rarest. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, a similar comet known as the Clone Comet appears. They appear four times, hitting the Cloudy Court Galaxy, Haunty Halls Galaxy, Chompworks Galaxy, and Flip-Out Galaxy. As their name implies, these comets can cause Cosmic Clones to appear. Their colour is blue.

Green Comets[]

Main article: Green Comets

Green Comets scatter some Green Stars across the galaxy. They are green, as their name implies. We never actually see them strike their target galaxy, however. They only appear after Bowser is defeated at the core of his forified fortress.
