Power Stars, or just simply Stars, are the rewards for completing missions in both games. Their purpose is to unlock new levels in said games. Mario must collect a certain number of Stars before he can face Bowser. There are also Green Stars, Red Stars, and Grand Stars, with Super Mario Galaxy 2 adding in Bronze Stars.

History[]

Super Mario Galaxy[]

In Super Mario Galaxy, Stars are required to activate the Comet Observatory's space ship abilities. There are 121 stars in total.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, Stars are required to power your spaceship, although other than the first Power Star you get, Grand Stars are the only source of power that are actually shown to help the spaceship. There are 242 stars in total (120 of them are Green Stars).

Other Games[]

Power Stars actually made their debut in Super Mario 64, as the endpoint for missions. Their design depicts them in a similar manner to their Super Mario Galaxy incarnations.

A similar item known as a Shine Sprite appears as the endpoint of the courses in Super Mario Sunshine.

Super Mario 3D World's ninth world, World Star (properly numbered World 9), may have been named after Power Stars.

In Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Power Stars return as the "end gate" for courses. Their design is unchanged from the original, but there is now counter to how many stars Captain Toad, the protagonist, collects as he and his colleagues (Toadette included) progress through the game.

A similar item known as a Power Moon appears as the endpoint of the courses in Super Mario Odyssey.

Appearance[]

Power Stars are 5 pointed stars that vary in colour. Their most common colour is yellow, but some stars can be bronze, green, red, and take the form of Grand Stars. The Star has black, oval shaped, eyes with white pupils on the top right-hand corner of the eyes.
